How To Aeroponics

http://www.gardeningsite.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/aeroponics.jpgA lot of people are interested in aeroponics, but there’s a dearth of guides available on how to.  Aeroponics is a way of growing plants that doesn’t use soil or another growth medium; instead, the plants are grown with their roots exposed to the air,the nutrients they need supplied by mist them with jets of nutrient infused water.

This has a number of advantages for the home gardener, especially if you‘re  a city dweller or anyone else dealing with limited amount of space. Aeroponics allows you to grow a tremendous number of plants in a remarkably small space. Since you don’t have dirt to worry about, you can be creative in your use of space.

As the subject of a how to, aeroponics is somewhat tricky, because there are almost an infinite variety of ways to apply the aeroponic principles. The very first thing to consider is what you want from your aeroponic system, and how much space you have available.

If you’re just looking for something where you can grow a couple of dozen plants then your how to aeroponics needs are going to be a lot different than someone who is aiming to grow a greenhouse’s worth of stuff. The desired size of your system is going to dictate cost, and vice versa, so you should have a clear idea of what you want and need before you get started.

The basic components of an aeroponic system are pretty simple. You need some kind of rack to grow the plants on, you need a spraying system to provide the plants with nutrients, and you need an area where they can get the sunlight that they need. You are probably going to want to have some sort of reservoir to catch the nutrient mix, unless you’ve designed a space especially with that in mind.Apollo 2 Aeroponic System, 22 plant system

Probably the simplest way of setting up an aeroponics system is to buy one of the commercially available systems. These usually include a simple how to aeroponics guide, and they will save you a lot of time and hassle. These have been available to home gardeners for the past thirty years or so, and they are designed to be easy to use and maintain.

These tend to be low pressure systems, which are less sophisticated but also much simpler than the systems you would find in a large commercial operation. If you’re just planning on having a small aeroponic garden, these are probably an excellent choice.

If you’re planning on something larger, then you’re probably going to need a more customized system. You can either buy a larger kit or you can have someone build it for you, both of which have advantages and disadvantages.

If you have it built, you are going to have the advantage of having of it constructed by experts, but the downside is expense. On the other hand, if you construct it yourself, which is well within the range of any half decent household handyman (or woman), you are going to have less expense but a lot more work.
